Trustee Support Initiative

For many years an annual event has been held in this region solely for the benefit of Trustees.  In 2008 this was held on Saturday 14 June at The Source Event Centre, Meadowhall, Sheffield and included sessions on Commissioning and Tendering, Fundraising, Duty of Care to Staff and volunteers, NHS and PCT impact on services for the Elderly and Resources for Trustees. In 2009, this was held on Thursday 24 September at  the Park Inn Hotel, North Street, York from 5pm - 9pm.  Several newly appointed Directors and Senior Managers from AgeUK joined us to give an update on the creation of a new charity following the merger of Age Concern England and Help the Aged, as well as presentations on the ongoing Services Debate and introduction of "Flagship Services", including Information and Advice.

This event was well attended by Chairs and Trustees of a number of local Age Concerns who took part in lively discussions around the "Services debate" and the implementation of a number of "flagship services", as well as learning more about the new charity, AgeUK, which will be launched in spring 2010, as the new force for later life.

The 2010 event was held at Pontefract Racecourse on Saturday 11 September and included presentations from AgeUKHead of Legal Services as well as an update from AgeUK Retail and the Head of Engagement.  Another informative event which was enjoyed by all who attended.


In 2011 we held our most successful Trustee Support Event yet at the Thorpe Park Hotel in Leeds, on Saturday 8 October 2011, which was attended by 24 Trustees and Chief Officers representing 10 Age UKs from our region.

During the planning sessions it was agreed that the day would focus as much as possible upon Age UKs and the excellent work they are doing.  This would be complemented by sessions which looked at the wider context for Age UKs including fundraising, working with partners and governance issues. 

Background to the 2011 event

Over the last year there has been much activity both within the world of Age UK and in the wider sphere of providing services for older people. For many there has been the challenge of working towards the Brand Partnership. This has been a successful exercise across the region with 19 Age Concerns becoming Brand Partners of Age UK, including a number who were previously Age Concern Groups. A particular achievement was the merger of Age Concern North Lincolnshire and Independent Living North Lincolnshire to form Age UK North Lincolnshire. This is the first Age UK to have been formed by a merger between an Age Concern and another organisation. Given the difficult funding climate which Age UKs have been facing over the last year it has been no mean feat to complete all of this work alongside all the other challenges they are facing.
